Dear Readers, Every feature in this issue is circling the same question from a different angle: does the technology change what actually happens, or does it just describe the problem faster? Sure – Generative AI can map your emissions, put a name to who was driving, or turn a two-hundred-page tender into an afternoon’s work, but none of it moves the needle until it’s tied to a decision someone is accountable for enforcing.

In a similar vein, AI generates visibility to tell you where you stand but establishing control changes where you go. It’s a pattern I’ve run into inside my own team this year: we built a log to catch errors in our communications, and the real fix wasn’t seeing the mistake. It was closing the gap where the check got skipped altogether. Same logic as the fob left plugged into the reader: the system worked exactly as designed and still left no impact without an intervention or rather – human integration.

So take that as the lens for this issue. Wherever “AI” appears in the pages ahead, ask what it’s actually doing: informing a decision, or quietly being mistaken for one. Get that distinction right and the tools earn their keep. Get it wrong, and you’ve just automated the same old blind spot, faster.
